A nation’s economy can be divided into three main sectors. The primary sector of the economy extracts or harvests products from the natural environment. Activities associated with the primary sector include agriculture, mining, forestry, grazing, fishing, petroleum extraction, and the use of wind or sun for energy production. The secondary sector of the economy produces finished goods from the raw materials extracted by the primary sector. Activities associated with the secondary sector include manufacturing and construction. The tertiary sector of the economy sells the goods produced by the secondary sector and provides other commercial services to both the general population and to businesses. Activities associated with the tertiary sector include retail and wholesale sales, transportation, distribution, hospitality, education, entertainment, financial services, health care, and professional services. These are often referred to collectively as the service industries. Below the various industries are organized by sectors.
